SMALLVILLE Almost Got a Green Arrow and Lois Lane Spinoff Series

When the Green Arrow was introduced on Smallville he was a big hit with the fans. It was really cool at the time to see these other superhero characters introduced in the series as they were building the show's version of the Justice League.

Oliver Queen a.k.a. Green Arrow was played by Justin Hartley in the series, and according to him the hero almost got his own spinoff series with Lois Lane! Hartley recently appeared on a podcast run by former Smallville actor Michael Rosenbaum (Lex Luthor) called Inside of You. It was on this podcast that Hartley said:

"While I was on the show, while I was on Smallville, there were several different spinoff ideas that they had. They wanted to do a spinoff called Metropolis or something like that, I heard whispers of that. It was Lois and Oliver in Metropolis and whatever that was. They were trying to extend the life of the show."

It would have been interesting to see a Smallville spinoff series that focused on Green Arrow and Lois Lane at the time. Seems like something that would have made sense because fans loved those characters. However, at the same time, I'm not sure how a spinoff would have effectively worked because, as you know, Oliver and Lois had a pretty rocky relationship, and in the end Oliver ended up with Chloe Sullivan and Lois, of course, ended up with Clark Kent.

I'd be interested in know what exactly the creative team was planning. Maybe it would have been done in the same way as Buffy The Vampire Slayer and its spinoff series Angel? That worked really well!

It is interesting that the spinoff would have been called Metropolis because there's a show in development right now called Metropolis that is said to focus on Lois Lane and Lex Luthor. They will "investigate the world of fringe science and expose the city’s dark and bizarre secrets." The series is basically taking a cue from Gotham as it will explore the city of Metropolis before Superman flies in to protect it.

Would you have liked to see this Green Arrow and Lois Lane spinoff happen while Smallville was on the air?
