Paramount Pictures originally set Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins to be released on October 16th, 2020. The movie completed shooting about five months ago and has been in post-production since. While the movie could make the planned release date, to be safe, and make sure people flock to the theaters to watch it, the studio is now looking to push the release date to sometime in 2021.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hasbro chairman and CEO Brian Goldner told analysts that the newest G.I. Joe movie would be shifting its release date back to 2021. A new date has yet to be officially announced. Goldner said:

"We're working out the specifics with Paramount. While we don't know when exactly in 2021 Snake Eyes will make its debut, it will be the fourth major Paramount release to get pushed to next year. A Quiet Place Part IITop Gun: Maverick, and The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water were all 2020 releases that saw numerous delays, before finally making the shift to 2021.

The movie is being directed by Robert Schwentke (RED, The Captain), and the cast for the film includes Henry Golding as Snake Eyes, Samara Weaving as Scarlett, Ursula Corbero as The Baroness, and Andrew Koji as Storm Shadow. The movie also stars Iko Uwais, who is playing Hard Master, “Snake Eyes’ tough as nails teacher who is also a skilled swordmaster.” Then there’s The Expanse actor Steven Allerick, who will take on the role of the father of the iconic G.I. Joe ninja commando.

The G.I. Joe spinoff follows Snake Eyes, “who while on the hunt for the man who murdered his father, travels to Japan and trains with the ancient Arashikage ninja clan.” The Arashikage “worked as shadowy assassins for generations, using deception to earn their keep as ninjas, as well as developing a reputation for being able to perform impossible tasks.”

I’m excited about this movie! I’ve been waiting for Paramount and Hasbro to actually make a good G.I. Joe film. Hopefully, this is a step in the right direction.
