Snake Eyes is Getting His Very Own G.I. JOE Movie!
Snake Eyes is easily one of the most of popular characters in the G.I. Joe franchise. He's just an all-around badass, and even though the first two live-action G.I. Joe films sucked, it was always a delight to watch him in action and kick ass.
Well, according to THR, Paramount Pictures is now developing a Snake Eyes solo film and they are looking to hire Evan Spiliotopoulos to write the script. Spiliotopoulos is best known for his work on Beauty and the Beast and The Huntsman: Winter's War.
I actually love the idea of Snake Eyes getting his own film! I've always said that the G.I. Joe movies could work better if they put the focus on one to three characters. Just like Marvel did when they first launched their cinematic universe with Iron Man. I also felt that a G.I. Joe cinematic universe could be built in the same way.
Give the fans a series of G.I. Joe films that put the focus on different characters and their missions. They could cross paths in these films and it could lead up to a big event type film. A couple years ago I wrote out my concept of how G.I. Joe should be handled and you can read it here.
Last year, we learned that Paramount had big plans for rebooting the G.I. Joe franchise with "a revamped look intended to appeal to younger audiences." Simon Waters, who oversees consumer products at Hasbro Studios, said that they want to take "a more millennial approach." He explains:
"The world has changed, and I think you’re going to see G.I. Joe changing with it. There’s going to be a much more contemporary approach to the whole franchise, and that will allow us to develop different characters."
Steve Davis, Chief Content Officer at the studio, went on to say that the next run at G.I. Joe will give us a different kind of 'Joe':
"We hope to create a head snap. It’s a different kind of ‘Joe’ — one that still resonates with ‘Joe’ fans but brings in an uninitiated audience and expands the audience internationally and domestically."
This Snake Eyes solo film is obviously a part of their plan. Snake Eye is known for his all-black ninja look and he doesn't speak. Here's a little background on the character.
One of the few mysterious and the more dangerous members of the G.I. Joe Team, Snake-Eyes served as a recon ranger in the jungles of Southeast Asia. All that can be said after that stint is he went on a long sabbatical, most believe it was in Japan. Some say he was training with the same ninja clan that begat Storm Shadow. We know his fighting skills have become more efficient and deadly. Rumors surfaced that when he was recruited into the Joe Team by Hawk, he was hunting rabbits at the time... with his bare hands.
There's no information on the story that the film will tell, it could be an origin story or it could be a story that features a version that is already established. There are so many stories to tell, it's hard to speculate how the studio and creative team might handle it.
What do you all think about Snake Eyes getting his own film? Is there a specific story that you'd like to see told that involves him?
