Some of My Favorite DRAGON BALL Z Moments to Celebrate 30 Years
This year marks the 30th anniversary of Dragon Ball Z. DBZ is not only a very popular anime, but for many, it was one of the first anime that we were introduced to. It has also inspired countless other anime that we love. I thought that in honor of its big anniversary a couple weeks ago, I would share some of my favorite moments from the series. What are some of yours?
Tien Blasting Cell/Confronting Buu
These are two separate moments, but I love them for fairly similar reasons. Tien becomes very underpowered in DBZ, but that doesn’t stop him from trying to slow down the big bads like Cell and Majin Buu. Tien deserves a bit more love in my opinion and his conviction to help even when he knows he can’t win just makes him leagues better than some of the other warriors.
Trunks Killing Frieza and King Cold
At the start of the third story arc of DBZ, fans are introduced to Trunks; a purple-haired mystery Saiyan. The best part is not that we are introduced to him and that he is the child of Vegeta and Bulma. No. The best part is how we’re introduced to him. He shows up and kills Frieza and Frieza’s dad King Cold like they’re nothing. What an entrance to make!
Piccolo
Piccolo has too many awesome moments to properly break down. However, some starters are his fight with Frieza, his fight with Android 17 (after fusing with Kami), and his first fight with Cell.
Gohan Obliterating Cell
The Cell Saga of DBZ came to an end after Cell fights Gohan and Gohan ends up obliterating Cell. Now, the coolness really starts as soon as Gohan goes Super Saiyan 2, but the key moment is when he unleashes his full-powered Kamehameha with one hand.
Goku Becoming a Super Saiyan/Super Saiyan 3
These moments are so incredibly awesome. The first time we learn about Super Saiyans is after Frieza murders Krillin in front of Goku. This causes Goku to lose it and his hair becomes blonde and stands straight up. After this moment, we’re treated to a whole new Goku who demolishes Frieza at every turn and it is a treat to watch. In the following sagas, we learn about Super Saiyan 2 (Ascended Saiyan), but it’s not celebrated as much. However, during Goku’s fight with Majin Buu, he surprises everyone by reaching Super Saiyan 3 and all of our minds were blown. The music itself at that moment is the best thing ever, but then we’re treated to a new level of awesome that would only live briefly until Dragon Ball Super released many years later (I’m ignoring GT). I’m still disappointed though that no one else seems to reach SSJ3.
On a side note, what do you think Nappa and Raditz would look like as SSJ3s?
