Something is Seriously Off About Sheriff Kane in LANTERNS

Something is off with Sheriff Kerry Kane in Lanterns, and fans are starting to put the pieces together.

Kelly Macdonald’s small-town sheriff has become one of the more suspicious characters in the HBO Max DC series, especially after the events of Episode 2.

While viewers aren’t necessarily convinced Kane is the Manhunter, a growing fan theory suggests she knows far more about Hal Jordan, Sinestro, and the strange events unfolding around her than she’s letting on.

Warning: Mild spoilers for Lanterns Season 1, Episode 2 follow.

The biggest red flag comes after William Macon shoots Hal Jordan. Sheriff Kane gets Hal to the hospital and stays with him while he recovers. When Hal wakes up, Kane tells him that he had been saying Sinestro’s name while unconscious.

That might seem like a minor detail, but some fans aren’t buying it. One viewer proposed a much more interesting explanation:

"What if Hal wasn’t actually muttering Sinestro's name while he was unconscious, and the sheriff said that to plant the idea in Hal’s subconscious to go see him once he got word of the Manhunter?"

It’s a pretty interesting theory because Hal has no way of knowing whether Kane is telling the truth. He was unconscious. She could have told him he spent the entire surgery reciting Batman’s grocery list and he wouldn’t have been able to argue.

Then there’s the hospital itself, which manages to make Kane look even more suspicious. When Hal leaves, he discovers that nobody else checked in or out during the entire time he was there.

Considering he underwent surgery and spent hours unconscious, that’s incredibly strange. The ward is practically deserted, and some of the medical equipment is still sitting in its packaging.

Hal notices how weird the place is. Kane doesn’t appear particularly bothered by any of it. That reaction, or lack of one, has fans questioning exactly what Kane knows.

Viewers have also picked up on the way the series visually presents her. Several scenes feature Kane through mirrors and other reflections, which could simply be a stylistic choice, but fans suspect Lanterns is using those shots to suggest that the sheriff isn’t exactly what she appears to be.

As one fan pointed out: "The way Lanterns keeps showing Kerry through reflections… there’s definitely something they’re trying to tell us about her."

Even with all those suspicious clues, the theory doesn’t necessarily end with Kane being revealed as the Manhunter. The same fan argued that she’s "definitely not who she says she is."

Episode 2 also gave viewers another important piece of information about Kane when she reveals that she’s originally from Gotham City.

That reveal adds another layer to the mystery because the Kane name carries some serious weight in DC Comics history. The Kanes are one of Gotham City’s prominent families, and Martha Wayne’s maiden name is Kane.

Fans had already suspected a Gotham connection after Kerry was heard speaking with a Commissioner over the phone, and now the show has confirmed where she came from.

Whether her surname connects her directly to Gotham’s famous Kane family remains to be seen, but it’s certainly an interesting detail for a DC series where viewers are already examining every clue.

At this point, Sheriff Kane could be connected to the larger mystery in several different ways. She could know something about the Manhunter, have information about Sinestro, or be involved with another part of the conspiracy that hasn’t been revealed yet.

Whatever the answer turns out to be, Lanterns is giving fans plenty of reasons not to completely trust her.
