Sony Developing a Movie Based on the Highly Popular Labubu Monster Dolls
Sony Pictures is diving into another toy-to-screen venture, and this time it involves one of the most sought-after collectibles in the world.
The studio is reportedly developing a film based on the hugely popular Labubu monster dolls, taking its first steps toward bringing the mischievous little creatures to life.
According to THR, Sony has secured the screen rights to the Labubu brand and has begun preliminary development on a film adaptation. The studio is exploring multiple directions for the project and evaluating what kind of movie best fits the quirky characters.
At this early stage, there is no creative team attached and the studio has not yet settled on whether the project will be live action or animation.
It’s reported that “the project is still at an early stage with no creative team attached. No decisions have been made about format, and the film could move forward as either live action or animation.”
While Sony has not issued any public statement about the acquisition, the move positions Labubu as the latest toy property the studio is shaping into a potential franchise.
Labubu’s journey started in 2015 when Kasing Lung introduced the characters through a series called The Monsters. These early designs were first produced by How2Work, but the brand’s momentum skyrocketed after Chinese retailer Pop Mart took over production in 2019.
Pop Mart leaned into the blind-box model, a sales method where buyers don’t know which figure they are getting until they open the package. This mystery-driven approach turned Labubu into a phenomenon. The surprise factor helped cultivate a thriving aftermarket, with rare figures commanding staggering resale prices.
From there, Labubu’s popularity spread quickly through East and Southeast Asia before catching on in regions like the United States. The dolls received a major visibility boost thanks to public figures, including Blackpink member Lisa, who frequently appeared with Labubu figures as accessories.
Pop Mart’s financial reports for 2024 and early 2025 highlight significant revenue growth tied directly to the monster doll line.
For now, Sony is keeping everything under wraps. With the project still in early development, more updates are expected as the studio works out its creative direction and begins assembling a team. Given the dolls’ worldwide following and the strong collectible market behind them, a Labubu movie could easily evolve into something big for the company.
