Sony Making a New TARZAN Movie After Recently Acquiring the Film Rights
Sony has acquired the rights to the Tarzan property by way of the original book by author Edgar Rice Burroughs. The studio is moving forward with a new film based on the classic tale, but plans are in the earliest of stages, with no writer, director or producer attached to what would be a full reinvention of the popular character first created by Burroughs in 1912.
Tarzan was the son of English nobility who was raised by apes in the African jungle after his parents were marooned there and died. He had no contact with Western culture until he was grown and “King of the Apes.”
Screen adaptations of the story have been adapted since the beginning of film, starting with Tarzan of the Apes in 1918, the 1999 animated movie from Disney, a popular animated series from Filmation in the ’70s, and most recently a big-screen version was Warner Bros.’ The Legend of Tarzan in 2016 with Alexander Skarsgård starring.
I’m not sure anyone really wants a new Tarzan movie, but maybe Sony has some interesting ideas in mind to make it stand out? I guess we will find out.
