Sony Officially Backs Out Of The Handheld Gaming Market

The handheld gaming market has changed drastically over the years, and many companies have tried and failed to unseat Nintendo’s iron grip on the market. Sony has tried (and failed) since 2004 to make the PSP a thing, but with the immense popularity of the Nintendo Switch and smartphones capable of running PUBG and Fortnite, there’s not really a niche for the PSP to hang out in anymore.

Sony recognizes this, and has formally announced the PSP will cease production in 2019 and that a follow up isn’t in the works (via Nintendo Life):

In Japan, we will manufacture PlayStation Vita until 2019. From there, shipping will end…Currently, we do not have any plans regarding a new handheld device.

Sony is far from dead of course, and truth be told, they held onto this venture far longer than they should have. Are you sad to see the PSP go?
