Sony Pictures CEO says "The Door is Closed" on The Spider-Man Deal and They've Got 5 or 6 Spidey TV Projects in the Works
Now that negotiations have died down (for the time being), Sony is moving full steam ahead on their plans for their big money-maker, the Spider-Man franchise. The last film grabbed over $1 Billion at the box office, and Sony is letting at all ride on the good thing they’ve got going.
At the recent Variety Entertainment and Technology Summit, Sony Pictures Chairman and CEO Tony Vinciquerra revealed that they are working on “five or six” series projects to push the webslinger’s franchise onto TV and Television streaming services. He also seems pretty confident that they have the franchise handled:
“Spider-Man was fine before the event movies, did better with the event movies, and now that we have our own universe, he will play off the other characters as well. I think we’re pretty capable of doing what we have to do here.”
He went on to talk about Kevin Feige and explains that he didn’t do all the work:
“We had a great run with (Feige) on Spider-Man movies. We tried to see if there’s a way to work it out….the Marvel people are terrific people, we have great respect for them, but on the other hand we have some pretty terrific people of our own. Kevin didn’t do all the work.”
Vinciquerra then confirmed that “for the moment the door is closed” on the Spider-Man deal.
There is a lot of world within the Spider-Man universe, so there is no shortage of stories to tell, or characters to play with, so this is pretty cool news. I’m hoping to see more from Into the Spider-Verse. How about you? Which spidey universe characters would you like to see hit the screen?
