Sony Pictures is Rumored to Be Adapting Marvel Comics' NIGHTWATCH with Director Spike Lee

Sony Pictures is reportedly planning to adapt Marvel Comics' Nightwatch into a feature film. The news comes from Jeff Snieder during a recent episode of the podcast Meet the Movie Press. He says that he's "very confident" that the project is happening and went on to reveal that the script is being written by Edward Ricourt (Jessica Jones, Now You See Me, Wayward Pines) and that the studio is looking at hiring Spike Lee (Do the Right Thing, Oldboy) to direct it.

Nightwatch is a lesser known Marvel character and has only made a small number of appearances in the comics. He had his own comic in the 90s but it was short lived because it the look of the character was way too similar to Spawn.

The character actually has a pretty fascinating origin story and is a very different character than Spawn:

After witnessing a man in a dark costume lose his life in a battle with a group of terrorists, the life of Dr. Kevin Trench would never be the same. He unmasked the lifeless body only to find that it was an older version of himself.

In a panic, he stripped his older self of the costume and went into hiding on an island. In a bid to avoid his violent death, he decided that if he never put on the suit, he could avoid his destiny.

Of course, he puts on the suit, which gives him enhanced abilities, the ability of shapeshifting and also invisibility. So, he ends up becoming a superhero. 

It'd actually be really cool if Sony ended up putting this film into development! Early on in the development of Spider-Man: Homecoming, Sony and Marvel were looking to possibly include Nightwatch in it, so the studio already had interest in playing with the character in a film.

If the studio does end up moving forward with it, that character will join the Marvel universe that Sony is building with Venom and Silver & Black.
