Sony Pictures Picks Up Action-Thriller RENEGADES With D&D Directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley
Sony Pictures has picked up another interesting film project, acquiring the rights to Will Simmons' short story “Renegades.” Simmons is also on board to adapt his own story for the big screen, while filmmaking duo Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley have signed on to direct the feature adaptation.
Sony is keeping the story itself under wraps for now, with only the description of it being an action-thriller. While plot details remain a mystery, the creative team attached already makes this one worth keeping an eye on.
Producing the film is Hutch Parker, whose credits include the Venom movies and the X-Men franchise, through his producing deal with Sony Pictures.
Simmons has built an impressive résumé over the last few years, especially when it comes to genre storytelling. He previously adapted Robert Kirkman's sci-fi action graphic novel Hardcore for Universal, with Skybound producing and Adam Wingard attached to direct.
His original feature spec Undo sparked a preemptive sale to New Line, where Beau Flynn is producing alongside directing duo Joost & Schulman.
Sony has already worked with Simmons before after acquiring his original action-adventure short story Caliber, which Escape Artists is producing, with Simmons once again handling the screenplay.
His previous projects also include writing a Sleepy Hollow remake for Paramount and a reboot of Internal Affairs for the studio. Most recently, he wrote They Like the Dark, which is scheduled to begin production this fall with Liam Hemsworth starring.
As for Goldstein and Daley, they continue to stay incredibly busy. The longtime creative partners are currently developing the next Star Trek movie for Paramount, which they'll also direct and produce from their own screenplay.
Before that, audiences will get to see their latest collaboration, Mayday, a Cold War-era buddy action comedy starring Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh, when it premieres on Apple TV on September 4.
The pair also earned plenty of fans with films like Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, Game Night, and Vacation, proving they know how to mix action, comedy, and sharp character work.
