Sony Pictures Releases Statement on Marvel Breakup and Places the Blame on Disney
Yesterday the big disappointing news hit that Sony and Marvel were breaking up and that Spider-Man will no longer be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It was reported that Sony will be developing any future Spider-Man solo films alone, and they confirmed this in a statement that they released. They also place the blame on Disney by not allowing Kevin Feige to continue working on the Spider-Man films:
“Much of today’s news about Spider-Man has mischaracterized recent discussions about Kevin Feige’s involvement in the franchise. We are disappointed, but respect Disney’s decision not to have him continue as a lead producer of our next live action Spider-Man film.”
The statement goes on to say that they hope this decision Disney made will change in the future:
“We hope this might change in the future, but understand that the many new responsibilities that Disney has given him – including all their newly added Marvel properties – do not allow time for him to work on IP they do not own. Kevin is terrific and we are grateful for his help and guidance and appreciate the path he has helped put us on, which we will continue.”
That’s a very different side of the story than what was reported yesterday! In all the reports yesterday, the blame was placed on Sony executives Tom Rothman and Tony Vinciquerra. It was explained that “Disney asked that future Spider-Man films be a 50/50 co-financing arrangement between the studios, and there were discussions that this might extend to other films in the Spider-Man universe. Sony turned that offer down flat, and I don’t believe they even came back to the table to figure out a compromise.” It was also said that the studio doesn’t “want to share its biggest franchise.”
The question is… what in the hell is going on and what is the truth!? Is Disney at fault like Sony claims, or is it Sony!? I hope Disney didn’t ruin this for the fans! That would piss me off! I’ll be pissed off with whoever is to blame for this mess. If it is Disney’s fault, then yeah, I don’t blame Sony for wanting to try and continue the franchise on their own. But I can see Disney not wanting to make money for another studio like they have with the Spider-Man franchise for Sony.
There are two more Spider-Man films currently in development that director Jon Watts would return to direct. Tom Holland will also reprise his role as Spider-Man. But, seriously… I don’t really see the point in that if he can’t be part of the MCU. They might as well just reboot the whole damn thing again.
A lot of fans are calling for a boycott of Sony right now, will they change the boycott to Disney if what Sony is saying is true?
