Sony Pictures Reportedly Looking at Alicia Vikander For SPIDER-WOMAN and Michelle MacLaren as a Director

We recently learned that Sony Pictures might be developing a film based on the Marvel character Spider-Woman. The project is said to be in the early stages of development, but the studio is reportedly looking at the talent they want to bring onto the project.

The Illuminerdi is reporting that the studio feels Alicia Vikander (Tomb Raider, Ex Machina) is the "ideal actress" for the lead role of Jessica Drew a.k.a. Spider-Woman. They are also interested in bringing Michelle MacLaren (Westworld, Game of Thrones) to possibly direct.

MacLaren was originally attached to helm Wonder Woman before she parted ways with WB over creative differences. Patty Jenkins later came in to replace her. It makes sense that Sony would be interested in bringing her on board to direct one of their female-led superhero films.

The Spider-Woman film is also reportedly being set up to serve as another bridge between the Sony Marvel films and the MCU. How? Well, Jessica has been a long-established best friend of Captain Marvel, which could allow her to fill a supporting role in any future Captain Marvel films, if that’s something Marvel and Sony can and want to work out.

The report offered the following description of the possible film that they managed to get their hands on:

“The Illuminerdi has seen the early ideas of what Sony and Marvel want from the character. It’s been hinted that she would fill a similar role to Spider-Man, bridging their Marvel films like Venom and Morbius into the greater MCU. The logline for the film hints at the general arc of the story, and actually seem to reflect a lot of classic elements of the character.

“The film will center on Jessica Drew, a young woman who decades ago grew deathly ill after months of exposure to the uranium being used in her father’s scientific experiments. He was forced to use an experimental medicine, which was based on the biology of an irradiated spider, to save her. She was sealed away in a genetic accelerator in an attempt to amplify the effects of the serum. Jessica wakes decades later, having not aged much in that time. She also gains a set of powers, along with no memory of who she was in the past."

None of this has been confirmed by the studio, so this is all just a rumor to take with a grain of salt. But, if it does turn out to be true, I would love to see Vikander in the role of Spider-Woman! She’s a great actress who has proven that she can kick ass.
