Sony Pictures Rumored to Be "Seriously Considering" Selling SPIDER-MAN IP Back to Marvel Studios
A rumor has surfaced claiming that Sony Pictures is “seriously considering” selling the Spider-Man IP back to Marvel Studios.
This info was reported by inside scooper MTTSH, and it one of those rumors that is hard for me to believe, but you never know!
The rumor comes after Kraven The Hunter completely bombed at the box office on its opening weekend. Sony has had a streak of bad Marvel movies with Morbius and Madame Web. Venom had a decent run for as mediocre as they were.
But Spider-Man is the studios bread and butter, all the Spider-Man movies that they produced with Marvel Studios were massive hits and even the Spider-Verse animated films were freakin’ fantastic!
The report doesn’t offer any insight into what might be happening behind the scenes, but if it’s true, maybe the failures are outweighing the successes for the studio.
I just can’t see Sony Pictures selling off a billion-dollar IP! It seems like Marvel and Sony have had a strong alliance when it comes to Spider-Man thanks to an unprecedented deal was struck.
It was actually recently revealed that this partnership "never precluded Sony from using Spider-Man in its movies that didn’t bear his name," but there was "a feeling within the studio that audiences would not accept Holland’s Spidey suddenly popping up in a live-action film that wasn’t a part of the MCU."
So, Sony could’ve been including Spider-Man in their films. I think they could’ve effectively incorporated Spider-Man into some of these spinoffs had Sony just worked with Marvel to make it happen. But, that ship has sailed.
If Marvel Studios was able to bring Spider-Man back fully into the fold, it would give them the freedom to do whatever they want with the character in the MCU including all of those other fan-favorite Spider-Man universe characters.
What do you think about this rumor? Do you think Sony would actually sell Spider-Man back to Marvel?
