Sony Pictures to Develop a 300-Style ROMEO & JULIET

William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is considered one of the greatest and most tragic romance stories of all time. It has had several film adaptations over the years, but none of them will be like the film version that Sony Pictures is planning on making. According to THR, it will be made in the style of Zack Snyder and Frank Miller's 300

The studio is in final negotiations to pick up the film project called Verona, which is the setting of the city in the legendary story. The spec comes from Neil Widener and Gavin James, and the site reports:

Exact details are being kept more clandestine than a love affair between two teens from opposing Italian families, but the script is said to reimagine the classic love story through a lens of an epic, 300-style world. 300 was the gritty and fantastical Zack Snyder movie that adapted the Frank Miller comic book miniseries that retold a battle between Greeks vs. Persians in a stylized and heightened reality.

This sounds like such an absurd concept. As much as I enjoyed the 300 films and the visual style, mashing it up with Romeo and Juliet just seems like a terrible idea, and completely inappropriate for the source material. Shakespeare would role over in his grave over this news. How about a movie in which Shakespeare comes back from the dead and uses extreme measures to stop Hollywood from making this film?
