Sony Sets Release Date for Golf Comedy THE PHANTOM OF THE OPEN Starring Mark Rylance, Sally Hawkins, and Rhys Ifans

Sony has set the release date for their upcoming golf comedy The Phantom of the Open, starring Academy Award winner Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies, Ready Player One), Academy Award nominee Sally Hawkins (The Shape of Water, Paddington), and BAFTA Award nominee Rhys Ifans (Notting Hill, Spider-Man: No Way Home).

The film comes from director Craig Roberts, and is based on the book of the same name by Simon Farnaby and Scott Murray, from a script adapted by Farnaby.

The story “follows Maurice Flitcroft (Rylance), a dreamer and unrelenting optimist who managed to gain entry to The British Open Golf Championship Qualifying in 1976 and subsequently shot the worst round in Open history, becoming a folk hero in the process.”

This sounds like a fun comedy with a great cast. The Phantom of the Open will open in New York and Los Angeles on June 3, with a wider release in additional markets set for the following weeks.
