Sony Sparks Up a New MEN IN BLACK Movie With BAD BOYS FOR LIFE Writer Chris Bremner
Sony Pictures is gearing up for another round of covert extraterrestrial clean up. A brand new Men in Black film is officially in development and the studio has tapped Chris Bremner, the writer behind Bad Boys for Life, to craft the script for this next chapter in the long running sci-fi comedy series.
The studio offered no comment, and insiders say the project is still in its earliest stages. Even so, there is one major detail that fans will latch onto.
Once Bremner completes his script, Will Smith is expected to be among the first to read it. The goal is to bring Agent J back into the fold in some capacity. No one knows what that would look like yet.
Insiders describe everything as open ended and say it could be a starring turn or something more along the lines of a passing the torch role seen in films like Creed.
Sources also emphasize that Smith is not attached and won’t make any decisions until he reads the screenplay. For now, fans can only imagine what kind of alien chaos the franchise might cook up for him.
The Men in Black series remains one of Sony’s most valuable pieces of IP. The 1997 original became a massive hit and the franchise has since pulled in $1.904 billion worldwide across its sequels and the 2019 reboot MIB International. It is no surprise the studio is ready to revisit the universe and try to capture that early magic again.
There are no producers on board yet, although every previous installment was produced by Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald with Steven Spielberg serving as executive producer. Since this new project is still taking shape, it remains to be seen whether they will return.
As for Bremner, he has become a reliable writer for high energy franchise films. His work on the last two Bad Boys movies helped power that series to a combined $837.1 million at the global box office. He has also become a frequent collaborator with Smith due to penning the upcoming Netflix action thriller Fast and Loose, which is expected to be Smith’s next movie.
What do you think about Sony looking to relauch the Men in Black franchise?
