Sony Will Finally Allow Cross-Play On The PS4

After years of resistance, Sony is finally relenting to the much-requested feature of players to allow cross-play with other platforms. Sony revealed that it will now enable cross-play “for selected third-party content,” which will give PS4 owners the ability to play the same game on other consoles.

“Following a comprehensive evaluation process, SIE has identified a path toward supporting cross-platform features for select third-party content,” Sony said in a blog post. “We recognize that PS4 players have been eagerly awaiting an update, and we appreciate the community’s continued patience as we have navigated through this issue to find a solution.”

The good news is that cross-play is now available on the PS4 starting with an open beta for Fortnite that will allow for "cross-platform gameplay, progression, and commerce across" the PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC, and mobile.

Sony then added that allowing cross-play on the PS4 will represent a “major policy change for SIE,” which makes sense since cross-play has been available to other platforms for a long time now, which is proof that technically, the PS4 is capable of having cross-play, but Sony decided not to support it, until now.
