Sony's Kraven the Hunter Almost Made His MCU Debut Twice, But It Didn't Work Out

Sony’s Kraven the Hunter is now in theaters, and whether fans love or hate what the studio made, it’s officially part of Sony’s checkered history. The character almost made his big screen debut for Marvel a few years back, a couple of times, but it never came to fruition.

One might think that the classic web-crawler nemesis would have only been thought of to appear in a Spider-Man film, but the first time he was pitched was by Black Panther director Ryan Coogler. He explained during a 2018 interview with Yahoo! UK:

“I’ve always loved Kraven the Hunter in almost every iteration. So there was a moment – ‘Can I grab Kraven?’ – and they were [like], ‘Nah, you don’t have Kraven.’ He was one where I thought ‘Oh, man.’ But I don’t even know if he would have worked in the movie we ended up with, this was the early days.”

That could have been cool to see, but either Marvel or Sony gave that idea the ax, and we got an amazing Black Panther movie that told a fantastic story with a now fan-favorite villain, Killmonger, played by Michael B. Jordan.

The next time Kraven was officially considered for a Marvel outing was when director Jon Watts was setting out to complete his Spider-Man: Home trilogy.

The 2021 threequel Spider-Man: No Way Home was a huge undertaking that cracked open the multiverse, and brought in some incredible characters for a really great film. But when ideas were still being tossed around, Kraven was proposed once again.

Spider-Man actor Tom Holland told Collider back in 2021 that Watts pitched the idea to him in case the multiverse tale didn’t work out:

“For a long time, there was going to be a Kraven movie that was going to be the third movie because things weren’t working out and all sorts of different stuff.

“Jon pitched me this Kraven movie, which actually was really cool. I don’t want to talk about it in case that movie ends up happening down the line, but it was fun.”

Again, I loved the movie we got, so even though the Kraven story might have been cool, it just wasn’t meant to be at the time.

Marvel’s Kraven The Hunter has left fans divided. Have you seen it yet? What are your thoughts? Would you like to see the character incorporated into the MCU and handled differently somewhere down the line?
