Sophie Thatcher Addresses MCU Rogue Casting Rumors and Reveals What Would Get Her Into the X-MEN Movie
Marvel fans enjoy throwing around casting ideas for the upcoming X-Men movie, and one name that keeps popping up is Sophie Thatcher.
Thanks to her breakout performances in projects like Yellowjackets and Companion, many fans have started picturing her in the role of Rogue.
Now, Thatcher has finally weighed in on those casting rumors, and while she isn't confirming anything, she certainly isn't shutting the door on the possibility either.
During an appearance on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast, Thatcher revealed that she's aware of the fan conversations connecting her to Rogue and admitted she's intrigued by the idea.
She said: “I’m open if it’s a director that’s down to collaborate and listen to me. I want to have a voice. I know that’s absolutely possible and people do that all the time.”
For Thatcher, joining a massive franchise like X-Men would come down to more than just putting on a superhero costume. She explained that the creative approach and story would be just as important as the role itself.
She continued: “It’s like that itself has such an impact, and I want to make sure it’s the right story. Not just spreading like violence and shock value, but something meaningful.”
The conversation took a fun turn when host Josh Horowitz asked whether X-Men was something she connected with growing up. Thatcher's answer was unexpectedly hilarious.
“It’s the blue people.”
After laughing about her response, she clarified exactly what she meant: “I’m going to get a lot of hate on that one. Like Jennifer Lawrence in blue. Mystique.”
She wrapped things up by making it clear she's open to whatever opportunities come her way, adding: “I’m open. Always. I’m open to anything.”
The upcoming Marvel Studios X-Men reboot remains in the early stages of development, and no official casting announcements have been made.
Director Jake Schreier, who is set to helm the film from a script by Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo, recently addressed the speculation surrounding potential cast members. While he confirmed that the names fans have been discussing online are unofficial, he also noted that the team is actively working through the casting process.
As for what fans can expect from this new version of the mutant franchise, Schreier has teased that the goal is to take the series in a fresh direction while honoring what came before.
He previously explained: “I think really just what we’ve been talking about more than anything is how do we make it feel new, and how do we go places that feel like we’re succeeding [our predecessors]?”
He went on to say: “Obviously, this series has done such incredible things and succeeded in so many ways, and done so many beautiful things. Like, what are some places we can go, and some areas of the lore that we can explore where it feels like we’re taking people to a new place.”
With the movie still a long way from production, details about the story remain under wraps. But as Marvel begins building its next generation of mutants, fans will undoubtedly continue talking about who should play the iconic mutant characters.
Whether Thatcher ultimately lands the role or not, plenty of Marvel fans seem like they would be more than happy to see her absorb Rogue's powers and step into the MCU.
