SPACEBALLS: THE NEW ONE Footage Debuts at CinemaCon and Watch The Title Announcement Video
After decades of fans hoping for a return to ludicrous speed, Spaceballs 2 is actually coming and we got to see the very first footage from the long-awaited sequel at CinemaCon, along with confirmation of its hilariously on-brand title, Spaceballs: The New One.
I can tell you, the franchise hasn’t lost its touch. The original Spaceballs has held its place as one of the all-time great parody films since its 1987 release. While it took aim at Star Wars, it also poked fun at pop culture as a whole.
With geek culture now dominating mainstream entertainment, the timing for a sequel actually makes a lot of sense, and based on what was shown, the creative team seems fully aware of that.
The footage kicked off with a message from Dark Helmet himself before shifting into something unexpected. Instead of a traditional trailer, the presentation played out like a documentary about how the sequel somehow got approved in the first place.
That concept sets the tone, and the intentionally unfinished visual effects add to the joke, making it feel like the movie is in on its own chaos.
There are some ridiculous and funny moments teased. Dark Helmet is seen wielding a triple lightsaber and Yogurt flashes his abs during the fight, which feels exactly like the kind of over-the-top gag you’d want. Then things get even stranger with a completely random shot of Harry Potter tossed into the mix.
The footage wraps with a bizarre scene featuring Avatar at a urinal, where Dark Helmet ends up in an awkward exchange about size. It’s juvenile, absurd, and very much in line with what fans expect from this franchise.
After the footage, Mel Brooks appeared to officially reveal the title, locking in Spaceballs: The New One as the name that will carry this sequel into theaters on April 23, 2027. You can actually watch that title announcement video below.
The project is directed by Josh Greenbaum and written by Josh Gad, whose involvement helped bring this whole thing together. That pitch clearly worked, because the film has managed to reunite much of the original cast.
Mel Brooks is back and will once again step into the role of Yogurt, the not-so-wise guide inspired by Yoda. Rick Moranis is gloriously returning as Dark Helmet, marking a rare on-screen appearance after stepping away from acting for years. He’s joined by Bill Pullman as Lone Starr, Daphne Zuniga as Princess Vespa, and George Wyner as Colonel Sandurz.
With a mix of returning legends and new comedic energy, Spaceballs: The New One looks like it understands exactly what made the original work while leaning into the absurdity of modern franchises. If this early footage is any indication, the Schwartz might still be in good hands.
