SPIDER-MAN: ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE Almost Included Huge Live-Action Scenes
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was such an incredibly fun movie filled with lots of cool surprises and while this is an animated movie, there were some live-action elements included. There were a lot more live-action scenes that were initially planned for the movie, but they were ultimately cut. The directors of the film recently talked about the sequel, offering some insight into why they cut these moments from the script.
Justin K. Thompson told Variety: "We had even bigger ambitions," and his co-director Kemp Powers explained why the scene didn’t make it into the film: "There were times when we had huge live-action sequences in the film, and it just turned into a bad joke. Even we didn’t like it anymore. And we just said, 'OK, enough, let’s make sure that it’s something precise that gets the most bang for the buck, and speaks to the story.'"
The directors didn’t offer any details on what these live-action sequences would have entailed, but they were all storyboarded out and animatics were created for them. It’s explained that the directors used cut-out versions of the live-action characters with other crew reading their lines. Powers said: "They had the look of like a South Park character," and Thompson then added: "We should do that as a character."
If you’ve seen Across The Spider-Verse, you know what live-action sequences were included. If you haven’t watched the movie yet, don’t worry, I’m not going to spoil it for you. But, I would love to know what these huge live-action scenes would have been! Maybe one day we’ll find out.
