Spider-Man and Doctor Strange's Relationship "Breaks Down" in SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME
As we’ve seen in the trailer for Spider-Man: No Way Home, Peter Parker and Doctor Strange find themselves breaking open the multiverse when Parker messes up a spell that he asked Strange to do. Parker wanted Strange to perform a spell that would make the world to forget that he’s Spider-Man, as Strange was performing the spell, Parker starts to panic about his loved ones forgetting everything as well and that starts messing with the spell. The result finds the two in a multiverse that features them facing off with villains from the other Spider-Man film franchises.
As you might expect, there’s gonna be a little tension between the two characters over that madness and that tension is going to break down their relationship over the course of the movie. Tom Holland offered up this little tidbit of information during an interview with Total Film / Games Radar. He said:
"It’s a very different relationship [from Tony Stark and Peter Parker]. I wouldn’t consider Doctor Strange as a mentor in this film – it’s more as a colleague. At this point in the films, Spider-Man has established himself as quite a powerful and serious Avenger. Doctor Strange sees that in him, and treats him like an equal. And throughout the course of the film, their relationship breaks down. And rather than becoming colleagues – they don’t become enemies, but they’re definitely not friends.
"Spider-Man always wants to please everyone. He always wants everyone to be happy. And then, in this instance, that’s not the case. It’s an interesting relationship. It’s very, very different from the one of Tony and Peter. But it’s a fun one. And obviously Benedict [Cumberbatch] – I love him to bits. He’s such a good guy. I’ve worked with him loads of times now, and I’ve always really enjoyed it. He’s been a real joy and pleasure to work with. Spider-Man and Doctor Strange are a great mix. They look great onscreen. The balance between them is very funny."
This is going to be an interesting dynamic between these two characters, and I’m curious to see how that plays out. It’ll also be interesting to see how this relationship will be portrayed in future films if we ever see the two in another film together again.
A poster was recently released that teased the return of Alfred Molina's Doc Ock, Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin, Jamie Foxx's Electro, and Thomas Haden Church’s Sandman.
The movie is being directed by Jon Watts, and the cast also includes Benedict Cumberbatch, Zendaya as MJ, Jacob Batalon as Ned, Marisa Tomei as Aunt May, Tony Revolori as Flash, and Hannibal Buress as Coach Wilson.
Spider-Man: No Way Home hits theaters on December 17, 2021.
