SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY Alternate Trailer Teases a Showdown With The Hand and Drops a Clue About Its Mystery Villain

A new alternate trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day has made its way online, and it opens with an extended sequence featuring Spider-Man facing off against The Hand, the infamous ninja clan from Marvel Comics.

The fight looks intense, and Peter Parker is pretty impressed by their “cool” combat skills, even as they're coming at him with an assortment of weapons.

There’s also a brief piece of dialogue that I thought was interesting. During the trailer, one of the civilians seemingly under the influence of Sadie Sink's still-unidentified character tells Spider-Man: "You're the only person I can't hop into."

That line raises some interesting questions about who Sink is actually playing. Many fans and insiders have spent months insisting she's portraying Jean Grey, but this latest tease continues to point in another direction.

In Marvel Comics, Spider-Man's Spider-Sense has never served as a defense against psychic attacks, making this mysterious ability feel like a clue that Marvel Studios may be pulling inspiration from another character entirely.

One possibility that continues to gain traction is Spider-Queen, also known as The Queen. The character possesses psychic abilities, has connections to The Hand, and famously transformed Peter Parker into a terrifying Man-Spider in the comics.

When you start lining up those comic book elements with what we've seen in the trailers, the theory becomes a lot harder to dismiss. Of course, Marvel and Sony aren't giving anything away just yet.

Sink recently spoke about joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe but remained careful not to reveal any details about her role, saying:

"It was so exciting. I grew up watching these movies. To join [the MCU] was very surreal. I really like the character [I’m playing] and that’s all I’ll say."

If Sink really is playing Jean Grey, it's still difficult to understand why the iconic X-Men character would be positioned as a central antagonist in a Spider-Man story, even with rumors suggesting the Department of Damage Control could somehow be involved.

The official synopsis for Spider-Man: Brand New Day paints a pretty compelling picture of where Peter Parker finds himself after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home:

"It's a Brand New Day for Peter Parker. Fighting crime full-time as Spider-Man in a world that doesn’t remember him—and the pressure of seeing his old friends move on without him—sparks a change in Peter he may not have the power to control.

But that transformation might also be the only thing that can stop a shocking new threat to the city and those he loves - a powerful villain no one can even see. The world may have forgotten Peter Parker, but he hasn’t forgotten them."

The film stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Tramell Tillman, Michael Mando, and Mark Ruffalo. It's directed by Destin Daniel Cretton from a screenplay by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings into theaters on July 31.
