SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY BTS Photo May Have Teased MCU Villains and Iconic Comic Moments
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is still deep in pre-production, but an unexpected peek behind the scenes may have just dropped some clues about what fans might be able to expect when Tom Holland returns as the wallcrawler.
The reveal was a quickly deleted Instagram post that could’ve spoiled some of the comic book moments director Destin Daniel Cretton plans to bring to life in the MCU sequel.
The image was posted by Cretton’s assistant Ziyi Cao, and fans managed to grab screenshot of it before it vanished. It shows off a Spider-Man action figure with the simple caption “Hang in there,” but on the wall behind the figure were two prominent comic book covers, and those could offer a hint about what’s coming.
The covers that were revealed are 1974's The Amazing Spider-Man #134 and 1991's The Amazing Spider-Man #345.
One cover features Spider-Man facing off against the villain Tarantula, with a surprise appearance from The Punisher. The other shows the webhead battling the obscure rogue Boomerang, and more intriguingly, Venom shows up again too. If these covers are anything to go by, Brand New Day could be bringing in some unexpected, and wild villains.
Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, backed up the idea that these covers mean something. He previously said: “He's got eight or nine comic covers up on his wall in his art department that he is bringing to life in this movie, which is super cool.”
That sounds like a clear nod that these scenes are more than just inspiration, they might be actual sequences we’ll see play out on screen.
While plot details are still under wraps, one other tidbit has surfaced: the movie is reportedly set before the events of Avengers: Doomsday. That means whatever chaos goes down in Brand New Day could help set the stage for Marvel’s next big crossover event.
The cast is stacking up nicely too, with Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, and Sadie Sink joining Holland in the next chapter of Spidey’s MCU saga. Spider-Man: Brand New Day hits theaters on July 31, 2026.
