SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY Director Destin Daniel Cretton Feels "Different" and Is a "Tonal Shift" for the Character

Marvel Studios is betting big on the two films they are slated to release this year. After a hit or miss comeback from the pandemic shutdowns, Marvel has faced more losses than wins in their theatrical releases.

But each of these films, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and Avengers: Doomsday, are follow-ups to the MCU’s most lucrative franchises, and fans are excited to see how each of these stories play out.

But we may be in for a surprise, as the director of Spider-Man 4, Destin Daniel Cretton, has revealed that this new film is going to be pretty different from the first three.

The filmmaker spoke with ComicBook at the Wonder Man series junket, and he was asked about Spider-Man. Cretton, who directed the first two Wonder Man episodes and the movie Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, said, “directing Spider-Man was one of the roles of a lifetime for me.”

He admitted that he doesn’t like to put a “stamp” on things that would be the “pinnacle” of his career, but he admitted that Spider-Man was different. “I look at every project that I work on and it’s really just, I haven’t done this before, is it exciting for me for the next two years? And Spider-Man is definitely that,” Cretton admitted.

He went on to say that he tried to make this upcoming film different from the Spider-Man movies that came before. He said he did the same thing when he worked as the showrunner for Wonder Man.

“All the creatives involved when I came on board wanted to do something that felt different,” Cretton said. “Of course, it’s still the Spider-Man that everybody loves, but this is a new chapter in his life, and that tonal shift was something that was really exciting to me. It felt really different, and it was an extremely gratifying experience.”

This makes sense, as the last time we saw Peter Parker, he was at a pivotal turning point in his life. His last family member is gone, and his friends don’t know who he is.

He is probably in college, and he is making a new life for himself after enduring a crazy amount of trauma that he doesn’t even have anyone to share with. We are picking up with a brand new story, and I’m interested in seeing how it all plays out.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is set to be released in theaters on July 31, 2026.
