SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY Swings Into IMAX After Smashing Box Office Records
Following one of the biggest opening weekends the movie industry has ever seen, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is getting ready for another major victory lap. Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios have officially confirmed that the latest Spider-Man adventure is heading to IMAX, giving fans another reason to head back to theaters.
The IMAX rollout begins on August 7, arriving just as Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey wraps up its three-week exclusive run on the premium format. If you've been waiting to see Peter Parker's latest adventure on the biggest screen possible, you won't have to wait much longer.
Tickets go on sale tomorrow through all major ticketing platforms, and anyone planning to catch the movie in IMAX will probably want to move fast. With The End of Oak Street set to open on August 13, the expectation is that Spider-Man: Brand New Day will only have about a week in IMAX before making way for the next release.
Sony has also unveiled a brand-new IMAX poster to celebrate the announcement. The IMAX news comes as Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues an absolutely incredible run at the box office.
The film exploded out of the gate when it opened on Wednesday, and what initially looked like an already historic debut may have become even bigger than anyone expected.
Early projections suggested the film would finish the weekend with roughly $355 million domestically, placing it just behind Avengers: Endgame and its $357.1 million opening weekend record. But stronger-than-expected numbers on Sunday appear to have changed the picture.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Spider-Man: Brand New Day may have actually earned closer to $359 million in North America, which would officially make it the biggest domestic opening weekend in movie history.
It wasn't just Spider-Man driving audiences into theaters, either. Paired with The Odyssey, the two films helped generate the biggest overall box office weekend ever, with more than $430 million earned across all movies playing in theaters.
Internationally, the web-slinger is putting up equally massive numbers. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is currently expected to finish with an estimated $927 million worldwide opening weekend, making it the second-biggest global launch of all time. Even that total could continue climbing as updated numbers roll in.
The film stars Tom Holland as Peter Parker alongside Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal, Tramell Tillman, Michael Mando, Marvin Jones III, Zabryna Guevara, Keith David, Liza Colón-Zayas, Olivia Booth-Ford, Eman Esfandi, Florence Pugh, Marisa Tomei, and Mark Ruffalo.
Destin Daniel Cretton directed the film from a screenplay by Chris McKenna, Erik Sommers, and Justin Kuritzkes. The producers include Kevin Feige, Amy Pascal, Avi Arad, and Rachel O'Connor, while Louis D'Esposito and David Cain serve as executive producers.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is now playing in theaters, and beginning August 7, fans will finally have the chance to experience its record-breaking adventure in IMAX. If the box office numbers are any indication, those premium screenings are going to fill up fast.
