SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY Turns a Familiar Superhero Trope Into One of the Movie’s Most Heartbreaking Twists

Superhero movies love a good mystery. Whether it's a glowing cube, a secret weapon, or some strange piece of technology everyone is fighting over, there's usually an object that keeps the story moving.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day starts off looking like it's following that same well-worn path, but by the time the credits roll, it completely changes the way you look at its central mystery.

Like most superhero movies, Spider-Man: Brand New Day features a MacGuffin, with Sadie Sink's character searching for something known as "V-Max." At first glance, it seems like exactly what you'd expect. It's the mysterious thing everyone is chasing, and it immediately raises questions about what it is and why it's so important.

As the story unfolds and the spotlight shifts toward Sink's character, it's revealed that she's targeting Damage Control because she's desperately trying to find V-Max.

Spider-Man eventually pieces together what the mysterious "mind-hopper" is after and begins investigating V-Max himself in an effort to understand what drives this dangerous new enemy.

For a while, V-Max feels like a standard superhero plot device. It pushes the story forward, creates conflict, and gives Peter Parker another mystery to solve. That's exactly what makes what happens later so effective.

Without giving away the movie's biggest surprise, writers Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers take what initially appears to be a routine MacGuffin and completely flip audience expectations.

The third-act reveal transforms everything viewers thought they knew about Sink's character, adding an emotional weight that hits much harder than you might expect from what seemed like a simple plot device.

It's one of those storytelling choices that reminds you a familiar trope isn't the problem. It's all about what filmmakers decide to do with it.

Director Destin Daniel Cretton did such a great job directing this movie and tell its story. Plenty of superhero movies introduce mysterious objects that exist simply to get heroes and villains punching each other.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day starts out making you think V-Max is another one of those familiar storytelling tools. Then it pulls the rug out from under you in a way that's surprisingly emotional, giving its central mystery real purpose and making one of the film's biggest moments land with genuine impact.
