SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME Director Discusses Nick Fury’s Surprising Twist

The final post-credits scene in Spider-Man: Far From Home offered a big surprising twist involving Nick Fury that teased the future of the MCU and where it is heading in Phase 4.

If you having seen the movie yet, you might want to skip out on this post because the director of the film, Jon Watts, explained this twist in a recent interview with CB.

If you’ve seen the movie, you know that the Nick Fury and Maria Hill that were helping Spider-Man weren’t really Nick Fury and Maria Hill. They were actually the Skrulls Talos and Soren. The real Nick Fury was in space, and it seemed to me like maybe he might be setting up S.W.O.R.D. (Sentient World Observation and Response Department), which would replace S.H.I.E.L.D.

They also showed us how easy it would be for the Skrulls to infiltrate and take over the world if they wanted to. When talking about this all this, Watts first wanted to clarify the timeline, saying:

"First of all, to clarify the timeline, that's real Nick Fury at Tony's funeral at the end of [Avengers: Endgame]. So it's not like he's been a Skrull forever or like, it's not like he's been a Skrull since Captain Marvel."

He goes on to say that there was an idea to tease the reveal of Fury as a Skrull early on for fans, but they ended up not going with it:

"We were going to have him eat diagonal toast cut diagonally," Watts said, referencing the Captain Marvel dialogue in which Fury said he will never cut his toast diagonally. "You know that one? That would've given it away."

There was one odd thing that Fury/Talos said that didn’t seem like something the real Fury would say. When Spider-Man asked about Captain Marvel, Fury/Talos responded with “Do not invoke her name,” which is something odd that I don’t think Fury would ever say. The director went on to talk about Fury’s history with the Skrulls in the comics saying:

"There's such a history of Nick Fury and the Skrulls, especially now that people have seen Captain Marvel and they've seen what is happening with those stories in the MCU. But to me it was always just this fundamental question of how could [Mysterio] actually fool Nick Fury? Because Nick Fury's super power is being suspicious, you know?"

It’s also explained that this twist allowed for Mysterio to get away with all of the lies he was telling. Watts explained:

"It always sort of bothered me even though we knew that that's what we wanted the story to be, that Nick Fury could get duped even though he's been gone for five years and he's on his back foot. I wanted to come up with one last little reveal that could explain that unanswered question. And when you're making a con man movie, it just feels like the right thing to do to have one last little twist that makes you look at everything slightly differently."

I really enjoyed this big Nick Fury twist, and I’m excited to see how this whole set up plays out in the MCU throughout Phase 4!
