SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING Almost Ended With an Iconic Moment From The CIVIL WAR Comic

Spider-Man: Homecoming almost had a different ending than the one we ended up seeing. It almost played out like an iconic moment from the Civil War comic book.

The ending we saw in the film had Peter Parker turning down Tony Stark's offer to join the Avengers team and be introduced to the world as the newest member of the team.

Screenwriters John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein recently revealed that the scene originally was written to show Spider-Man not only being introducing to the world but he would have also revealed his secret identity just like Civil War #2. Goldstein explained:

"That scene with the press behind the door, that started off as a more clear opportunity for Peter to say to the world, 'I Peter Parker, am Spider-Man.' And he decides not to do it and walks away. It’s still that, but it had been set up that if he could just tell the world who he is, he would get all his problems solved and be loved by everyone."

Daley adds:

"What he realizes is that there is a virtue in being a secret identity and how he kind of has the advantage in many ways over his other superhero buddies."

I'm kind of glad that they didn't go the route of revealing Spider-Man's identity. That would have taken things in a completely new direction. Keeping his identity a secret makes so much more sense. There's also more fun to be had with him keeping his identity a secret.

One other interesting thing revealed in the interview is that The Vulture was almost going to be one of Peter's teachers.

“We tried to figure out an organic way to connect [Peter’s] school story with his superhero story. I think he was still stealing from Damage Control, but we had a different way into it,” Daley explained. Ultimately, though, “we were like, ‘No, let’s separate him fully from the school — or at least so it seems. And that’s I think when we decided to make it the love interest’s dad.”

I really loved how The Vulture was handled in the film. It was a complete surprise and most people didn't see that big twist coming at all.
