SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING Writers Address Uncle Ben and Reveal a Reference To Him That Was Cut
One of the things that Spider-Man: Homecoming never really got into was Uncle Ben. It didn't need to be included because everyone pretty much already knows what happened to him. During a recent interview with EW, writers Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley address the character and revealed a little homage to Uncle Ben that they ended up cutting from the film. When asked if there was a scene that would have referenced Ben, Daley said:
"We did talk about there being a scene where [May] references him directly. It was when [Peter] was getting ready for homecoming and the wardrobe she was giving Peter was all Uncle Ben’s clothes. It was a nice moment, but we also knew that it veered away from his arc. If you’re going to talk about someone’s death, you don’t want it to be a throwaway."
It's kind of a nice thought to think that Peter Parker was wearing Uncle Ben's clothes to homecoming, even if they didn't mention that they were his in the film. I understand why they didn't want to full on address Uncle Ben, though. Maybe that will come in a later film. One thing that we'll most likely see in the sequel, though, is Aunt May dating someone! Goldstein says:
"In an early draft we actually even had her dating a guy, and part of her relationship with Peter was this inappropriate frankness. It didn’t make the cut, but I could see in the sequel she could get a boyfriend. She doesn’t have to be a mourning widow."
No, she doesn't. It would be silly to have Marisa Tomei play Aunt May and not have her dating anyone. One character that Aunt May famously dated in the comics was Otto Octavius a.k.a. Doctor Octopus, that would make for an interesting story dynamic! Hell, she almost married the guy!
