SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE Almost Included Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland Cameos
It was previously reported that Tobey Maguire was almost cast as the original Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse. While that would have been pretty cool, the creative team didn’t want to confuse audiences.
Now, co-director Rodney Rothman has revealed that he originally wrote a scene where featured Maguire’s Spider-Man, Andrew Garfield’s Spider-man, and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. Yep, that would have been incredibly fun to see. But, again… they felt it would confuse audiences.
"I wrote a scene that had every, that had Tom Holland and Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire in the same scene and... I don't want to get into it but I did write that scene, but there's a lot of anxiety, there's a lot of anxiety around the movie generally and there was anxiety about confusing people."
I don’t think they give the audience enough credit. It’s hilarious to me that they had anxiety about confusing audiences, when they made a film that did a deep dive into the Spider-Man multiverse and introduced multiple versions of Spider-Man!
Including these cameos wouldn’t have confused anyone. It just would have been a fun tribute to these previous versions of the character, and I think the audience is smart enough to understand that.
Who knows, maybe they’ll try it again for one of the sequels or spinoff films that are currently in development. With the film being such a huge success, the filmmakers will go into these other movies with much more confidence.
