SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE Sequel Producer Teases the Japanese Version of Spider-Man Is Coming
Last week Sony Pictures officially announced that they were moving forward with a sequel to Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse and that it would be released on April 8th, 2022.
The sequel is being directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, who previously worked on shows such as Avatar: The Last Airbender and Voltron: Legendary Defender. David Callaham (The Expendables, Wonder Woman 1984) is writing the script.
We don’t have any story details to share, but it’s been said that the story will be set two years after the events of the first film. It’s also been reported that Gwen Stacy will be involved. Now one of the producers of the film, Phil Lord, is teasing that the classic Japanese version of Spider-Man might be appearing the film!
In response to a tweet from a fan wanting to design the Japanese version of the character from the film, Lord said that the character has already been designed, which means he’s a character that they certainly are considering using. Will Japanese Spider-Man actually show up in the movie? I hope so! But we’ll just have to wait and see.
Japan made its own version of Spider-Man back in the 1970s after the Toei Company got a license for Spider-Man which allowed the company to make its own hero. While the Japanese version looked like Spider-Man, it was a very different kind of character from the comics. Peter Parker was replaced with a Japanese hero who pilots a giant mecha called Leopardon. I would love to see this version of the character make his debit in Into The Spider-Verse! That would be so much fun!
