SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME Writers Had Plans To Bring Back Even More Characters!

Spider-Man: No Way Home ended up being packed with lots of great characters from the various Spider-Man films that have been made, and those characters were actually juggled really well in the film. Well, it turns out that when the writers first started working on the script, the were planning to bring in even more characters!

If you haven’t seen the movie yet, you might want to skip this.

If you saw the movie, then you know that on top of Doc Ock, Green Goblin, Electro, Sandman, and Lizard, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield also showed up as their versions of Spider-Man, which was awesome! It was so freakin’ cool seeing them come together and fight alongside each other!

During and interview with VarietyNo Way Home writers Erik Sommers and Chris McKenna said they actually wrote their first draft with as many characters in it as possible. McKenna said:

"Let's write the script that is the kitchen sink and we'll just act like we were going to get everything we wish for, and like Peter's wish, it became a nightmare, and it required very, very talented people to help us not die at the end."

Some of the other characters they included in this script were Kirsten Dunst’s Mary Jane Watson, Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy, both of whom were previously rumored to show up in the film. They also included Sally Field's Aunt May. McKenna went on to say:

"We went down different roads with different characters that just didn't fit. We can't get into the details of that because it might be the kind of thing where they'll find a way to explore those ideas. So I'd hate to spoil anything, because I think we had a lot of fun."

Sommers went on to admit the first draft they wrote was much more than the studio and story required:

"The first draft, we bit off more than we could chew. Maybe some would argue that we still bit off more than we can chew."

It was also confirmed that Tom Hardy's Venom could've played a bigger role in the story and could’ve appeared in the final battle. They admitted that they "definitely discussed" this possibility, but didn't end up pursuing it.

I think what they ended up delivering was perfect. It was the right amount of everything, and in the end it told a great story that fans are obviously loving!
