SPIDER-NOIR First Reactions Call It “Amazing” and Compare It to BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES

A couple of reactions for Spider-Noir have popped up on Social Media, and while it’s still early, the tone is already setting expectations high.

The reactions we’re seeing here are throwing around words like “amazing” and “spectacular,” and one comparison in particular is catching a lot of attention: Spider-Man meets Batman: The Animated Series.

We’ll have a full review closer to release on May 22, but for now, these early impressions are giving fans a lot to chew on.

Batman: The Animated Series was developed by Bruce Timm and Paul Dini, and it’s still considered one of the greatest comic book adaptations ever made. If Spider-Noir is even brushing up against that level of tone and storytelling, then Sony might actually have something special on its hands.

That said, caution is still the name of the game. Sony’s recent track record with its live-action Spider-Man-adjacent projects has been shaky at best. But the involvement of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the creative duo behind Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, does help ease some of that skepticism.

For now, these reactions should be taken lightly until full reviews land, but the early vibe suggests this series might actually deliver something fans can rally behind.

We also got a look at the episode lineup thanks to insider @Cryptic4KQual, and the titles alone lean hard into that noir energy:

Episode 1 - Step Into My Office

Episode 2 - Tread Lightly

Episode 3 - Double Cross

Episode 4 - A Mistake I'll Never Make Again

Episode 5 - Betrayal

Episode 6 - Nightmare on a Gurney

Episode 7 - Nobody's Hero

Episode 8 - The Man in the Mask

That lineup sounds like it’s going to dig deep into character and consequence, which fits perfectly with the tone they seem to be going for.

Spider-Noir follows Ben Reilly, played by Nicolas Cage, reimagined as a worn-down private investigator in 1930s New York. This version of Spider-Man isn’t swinging through bright skylines.

He’s dealing with loss, regret, and a past that won’t stay buried. The show leans into that pulp detective vibe, blending superhero elements with a darker, character-driven story.

The cast also features Lamorne Morris, Li Jun Li, Karen Rodriguez, Abraham Popoola, along with Jack Huston and Brendan Gleeson. There’s also a packed list of guest stars, which suggests we’ll be seeing a wide range of characters woven into this gritty version of New York.

The series is run by Oren Uziel and Steve Lightfoot, with development support from Lord, Miller, and Amy Pascal. That’s a team with serious experience in both blockbuster storytelling and grounded character work.

All eight episodes of Spider-Noir drop on Prime Video on May 27.
