Spike Actor James Marsters Shares His Experiences with Joss Whedon on BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER
James Marsters, the actor who played Spike in the Buffy The Vampire Slayer series, recently appeared on Michael Rosenbaum’s podcast Inside Of You. During the interview, Marsters was asked about his personal experience of working with Joss Whedon on the series.
We’ve heard a lot of stories from actors about how that was a toxic work environment. It’s widely known that at one point during the production, Whedon pushed Marsters up against a wall telling him that his character was dead regardless of how popular the character had become.
You see, Spike was originally supposed to be killed off after only five episodes, but the fans spoke up and they all wanted more of him forcing the studio to want to keep Spike around. This upset Whedon because it threw a wrench in his plans for the story that he wanted to tell.
The actor reiterated the story of this confrontation in the interview. He also talked about the pressure that Whedon was under when he was producing the series. He shared that Whedon was like a "mad wizard," who could create magic, but he was always under an enormous amount of pressure to live up to the high bar that he set with Buffy.
