Halo meets Portal. If that sounds fun to you, go ahead and stop reading this article and download the game and try it out, it’ll be worth your time. But for those who have stayed, let me tell you why you should try out Splitgate. The game is simply an FPS shooter with a well-rounded number of weapons and each person has a portal gun. The objectives and game modes are very reminiscent of Halo 2 and 3 (practically copies) but in the best ways possible. While talking about it here may seem like it is just a copy of those two games, it has a unique feel and pacing that make it totally worth checking out.

The gameplay loop is quite typical and familiar to shooter fans or those used to any kind of modern online game. A battle pass is available with free and paid rewards. There are various achievement-like things that unlock a number of cosmetics. Gunplay feels responsive, tight, and fair. Maps vary from fancy wooden rooms to outer space bridges. Progression is rewarding and games come and go quickly. I don’t know if a ranked system would ever come about because it feels far more arcade-y than serious. But that doesn’t mean that clutch moment don’t occur, it just means that things are more wild and fun than serious and strategic.

There isn’t too much more to say other than this is a really fine game, and everyone who likes any kind of shooting game should give this a try. It’s free, it’s on just about every platform, and the only complex part about it are the portals. It will take just about anyone at least four or five games to get the hang of the portals, but players can still do nominally well without them. It’s free-to-play, cross-play, is loads of fun, and has a standard set of guns, some nice maps, and game modes like SWAT, Shottys Snipers, Team Deathmatch, King of the Hill, Teabag Confirmed, and more. So try it out and let us know what you think!
