STAR TREK: PICARD Is Getting a Prequel Novel and a Comic Book Series

The highly anticipated Star Trek: Picard series is going to get an expanded story thanks to a prequel novel being written and a comic book series being developed. These projects are going to fill in the story gap between the 2002 film Star Trek: Nemesis and the upcoming Picard series.

The first prequel to appear will come from IDW, and it’s called Star Trek: Picard – Countdown. This is a three-issue comic book series that will “center around a single mission that would change the life of Picard.” That series is being written by Mike Johnson and Picard supervising producer Kirsten Beyer, and it will launch in November.

Following the conclusion of Countdown, the novel will be released. That novel is called The Last Best Hope, and it will “lead directly into the Picard television series proper, and introduce new characters appearing in the show.” The series is being written by Una McCormack who previously wrote eight novels that tie into the Star Trek property. That book will be released in 2020.

Veronica Hart, CBS Consumer products executive VP of global franchise management, had this to say in a statement:

“From the moment we announced this series we’ve seen a groundswell of support from our fan base who are thrilled to have Jean-Luc Picard back on their screens. Having this brand new original backstory play out through both comic book and novel formats will set the stage for the new series in an exciting way while also showcasing the work of our talented partners at Simon & Schuster and IDW.”

I’ll be looking forward to checking these out as we move forward in this next chapter of Picard’s life. In the series we’ll see Patrick Stewart’s Picard embark on a mission to protect a mysterious and powerful young woman named Dahj (Isa Briones) who shares some kind of a connection with him. He assembles a small crew for a little galaxy-class or Sovereign-class flagship like the Enterprise. It’s not the best ship in the world, but it’ll get the job done.

His new crew includes cast members Santiago Cabrera as Cristobal “Chris” Rios, Michelle Hurd as Raffi Musiker, Alison Pill as Dr. Agnes Jurati, Harry Treadaway as Narek, and Evan Evagora as Elnor.

The series will also include Star Trek veterans Brent Spiner as Data from Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Voyager’s Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine, Jonathan Frakes as Will Riker, and Marine Sirtis as Deanna Troi. The Borg will also play a role in the series.

Star Trek: Picard comes to CBS All Access in early 2019.
