STAR TREK: PICARD Will Feature Picard's Return to Space But Not in a Way We'd Expect

There’s still so much that we don’t know about the upcoming series Star Trek: Picard, but Star Trek fans are pumped up for it! We do have a new detail to share with you regarding the return of Patrick Stewart’s Jean-Luc Picard that I think fans will appreciate.

While we’ve only see footage and photos of Picard on Earth so far, Executive Producer Alex Kurtzman has revealed that he will be returning to space in the series, and then added, “but not in a way that anyone expects.”

While talking to EW, Kurtzman teased that what we see from Picard in this series is unpredictable:

“Events began to unfold that conspire to take Picard back to the stars. He will [go to space], but not in a way that anyone expects”

Kurtzman went on to add that Picard is no longer a part of Starfleet and explained what that means for the character:

“Because he’s no longer in Starfleet, he no longer carries the weight of that behind him…In some ways, it’s easier to be [a great man] when you’re a captain. But it’s an entirely different thing when you don’t have an army behind you. When you want to get something done and fight an injustice, how do you do that when you’re really only one man?” “

That’s certainly an interesting story to explore, and I’m excited to see how it plays out! What we know so far is that the show will be a continuation of Picard’s story set 19-20 years after the events ofThe Next Generation‘s finale. According to reports, the ten episode series “will be playing into Picard’s interest in archaeology, and his main mission will revolve around some sort of artifact that’s been discovered.” It’s also been said that Picard will be affected by their destruction due to his close involvement with building a bond between the Romulan Empire and the Federation. Stewart also said that it would “explore new dimensions within [the character].”

When previously talking about continuing the story of Picard, producer Alex Kurtzman said:

“I think we’ve found a story that honors everything that people love about the character, but in ways that are not what you expect — and yet, become more and more familiar as the show goes. And that’s what’s exciting. A lot has happened to Jean-Luc Picard in the intervening years [since Nemesis]. There’s been a lot going on and he’s had to deal with some new things, he’s had to deal with some old things, and both of those things kind of come colliding together.

“He’s made choices that he’s not necessarily feeling great about — and yet I think the audience will understand exactly why he made them.”

Showrunner Hanelle Culpepper will direct the first two episodes of the series, and it also stars Alison Pill (The Newsroom), Harry Treadaway (Mr. Mercedes, Penny Dreadful), Isa Briones (American Crime Story: Versace), Santiago Cabrera (Salvation), Evan Evagora, and Michelle Hurd (Blindspot).

Star Trek: Picard is going to premiere in late 2019 on CBS All Access. Fans will get their first real look at the series during the Star Trek panel taking place at Comic-Con this week!
