STAR TREK: STARFLEET ACADEMY: Season 2 Release Date and Photos; Bill Nighy and Rosemarie DeWitt to Guest Star
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is getting one last shot at winning over fans, and now we know when the second and final season will arrive. Paramount+ has announced that the series will return in March 2027, with Bill Nighy and Rosemarie DeWitt joining the cast as guest stars.
The news was revealed during Saturday's Star Trek Universe panel at New York Comic Con, where series stars Holly Hunter, Sandro Rosta, Bella Shepard, Karim Diané, and Robert Picardo appeared alongside co-showrunners and executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau.
Nighy, known for Living and About Time, will play Nyk Ake, the estranged father of Hunter's character, Nahla Ake. DeWitt will portray Laytha Sadal, the mother of Tarima and the First Lady of Betazed.
Both characters appear in newly released Season 2 photos, giving fans an early look at what's coming when the cadets return to Starfleet Academy.
The second season picks up with the young cadets entering their sophomore year aboard the USS Athena. Their training will bring plenty of new challenges as they deal with growing rivalries, complicated relationships, difficult diplomatic negotiations, and a fiercely competitive schoolwide tournament.
There's also a mysterious new cadet joining the Academy, and their arrival raises some questions that could have consequences extending well beyond the school.
Produced by CBS Studios in association with Kurtzman's Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment, the series follows a new generation of Starfleet cadets learning what it takes to become officers while dealing with friendships, romance, rivalries, and threats to the Federation.
Of course, the big question is whether Season 2 can deliver a better show than what we got the first time around. The first season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy was incredibly divisive among fans, and personally, I thought it should've been so much better.
A series about young cadets training to become Starfleet officers should've been a badass, awesome sci-fi adventure filled with interesting characters, compelling stories, and the kind of excitement that makes Star Trek worth watching.
Instead, we got a poorly made show with uninteresting characters, weak writing, and stories that just weren't very engaging. The concept had so much potential, but the execution left a lot to be desired.
That's what makes the whole thing frustrating. Starfleet Academy could be such a cool corner of the Star Trek universe to explore, especially with a new generation of cadets finding their place in the Federation. There's so much you could do with that premise, but the first season never managed to make it work.
With Season 2 already confirmed as the final chapter, there's one more opportunity to turn things around. Bringing in talented actors like Nighy and DeWitt certainly doesn't hurt, but the series needs more than recognizable faces. It needs stronger storytelling and characters worth getting invested in.
Hopefully, the creative team learned something from the first season and can give these cadets a more satisfying final adventure.
