STAR WARS BATTLEFRONT 3 Rumors Heat Up as DICE and Respawn Are Reportedly Working on the Game
Could Star Wars Battlefront 3 finally be happening? Fans have been waiting years for another entry in the popular Star Wars shooter series, and some interesting new claims suggest the long-awaited sequel could be getting closer to reality.
The latest information comes from Joe Brammer, CEO of Wardogs developer Bulkhead, who claims that Battlefield studio DICE and Apex Legends developer Respawn Entertainment are already working on the game. That's a pretty exciting combination of studios if the information turns out to be accurate.
The rumors started gaining traction earlier this week when Giant Bomb's Jeff Grubb discussed a report from Electronic Gaming Monthly claiming Disney has "big plans" for the Star Wars Battlefront franchise.
According to that report, Lucasfilm has been searching for a development partner to bring the series back, with DICE and Bungie reportedly emerging as the leading candidates.
DICE would be an obvious choice considering the studio developed the previous two Star Wars Battlefront games. Bungie would be a more unexpected pick, especially with the Halo creator currently focused on Marathon and its ongoing work with Destiny.
Things got more interesting when Brammer jumped into the conversation on social media and shared what he'd heard about the project. "DICE and from what I’ve heard Respawn are working on Battlefront 3," he says. "Not sure what that means for Battlefield."
That certainly raises some interesting possibilities. DICE knows the Battlefront franchise, while Respawn has plenty of experience with fast-paced multiplayer shooters thanks to Apex Legends. Having both studios involved could be a great match for a new Star Wars multiplayer game.
Of course, Brammer's comments also raise questions about what this would mean for the Battlefield franchise and how DICE would divide its resources between two major shooters.
Brammer also had a little fun with the conversation, admitting that "Star Wars Wardogs" sounds cool. That's a crossover nobody was asking for, but it's a fun idea.
For now, it's important to remember that EA, DICE, Respawn, and Lucasfilm haven't officially announced Star Wars Battlefront 3. There's also some conflicting information about which studios might be involved, so it's unclear whether development has actually started or if Lucasfilm is still considering its options.
The timing of these rumors is interesting, though. Lucasfilm recently discussed its evolving approach to Star Wars video games, particularly with projects such as Star Wars: Zero Company and Star Wars: Galactic Racer.
The company has said it plans to "continue to surprise folks" and has become "more flexible" with the kinds of Star Wars gaming experiences it's willing to explore.
Bringing back Battlefront would certainly make a lot of fans happy. There's still a massive appetite for large-scale Star Wars battles, and the idea of DICE teaming up with Respawn to deliver the next installment sounds pretty awesome.
Nothing is official yet, but it's encouraging to hear Star Wars Battlefront 3 being discussed again, especially with a studio executive publicly sharing what he's heard.
Would you like to see DICE and Respawn team up for Star Wars Battlefront 3, or would you rather see another developer take over the franchise?
