STAR WARS: EPISODE IX Director on the Importance of Rey's Character in the "Entire Galaxy"

Star Wars: Episode IX director Colin Trevorrow has been reading all of our fan theories regarding where the new Star Wars trilogy is headed, and he's preparing to answer all of our questions. In a recent interview with ET, Trevorrow explained that he is going to give us something "deeply and profoundly satisfying" and how he wants to honor the story and characters. He said:

"By the time we get to Episode IX, I look at that movie as one movie, as three movies, as six movies, and as nine movies. It’s something that needs to honor a story that has been told over a period of 40 years… Star Wars is a belief system, it’s not just a story and it’s not just a movie, and it’s something I take very seriously."

He went on to talk about Daisy Ridley's character, Rey, and how he believes that fans won’t be disappointed.

"We’re going to make sure that that answer is deeply and profoundly satisfying. Rey is a character that is important in this universe, not just in the context ofThe Force Awakens, but in the entire galaxy. She deserves it. We’ll make sure that that answer is something that feels like it was something that happened a long time ago, far away, and we’re just telling you what happened."

When he talks about her importance to the entire galaxy, it makes me believe that her importance to the story goes way beyond being Luke Skywalker's daughter. It also makes me believe that her character will carry on beyond this trilogy and will carry over into a new one that will continue the epic saga that started with A New Hope. The director continued:

“What's interesting is I'm not creating a host of new characters. I have a lot of characters that people really love that we're going to make sure are all honored. No one's going to be left behind.”

He doesn't mention any other characters that he'll be including, but I'm sure he's talking about Luke, Leia, Chewie, and more. He does say that he's excited to take these characters to new places. Trevorrow explains:

"They are icons, but they're also people that have suffered tremendous loss and challenge over the course of all these films. [Episode IX] is something that needs to honor a story that's been told over a period of 40 years. I don't want to ignore any of it, and I respect all of it. It's something I think the fan base is going to embrace."

I have faith that Trevorrow will give fans a conclusion to the trilogy that will leave us in awe. At least, that's what I'm hoping for!
