STAR WARS: EPISODE VII – A Whole Action Scene Was Shot in IMAX

We already knew that J.J. Abrams is shooting Star Wars: Episode VII in 35mm to replicate the look of the original trilogy. We also knew that some parts would be shot using 70mm IMAX. What we didn't know is to what extent the IMAX format is being used.

One big drawback to shooting 70mm IMAX is the size and weight of the cameras. I've also heard they are incredibly loud.

“The benefits outweigh the headache of shooting on IMAX cameras,” says Abrams, who used them for a single sequence in “Star Wars.” “The opportunity to have an action sequence for this movie done in IMAX’s natural format was too delicious an idea to pass up. As a filmgoer, it’s something I want to see.”

An action scene or sequence would be perfect for IMAX. You end up dubbing most of the sound anyway. But what you get is a vivid picture that can't be equaled by digital (for now).
