STAR WARS Finally Embraces Horror With New Novel HIDING FROM THE DARK: A STAR WARS HORROR STORY
After nearly five decades of space battles, Jedi philosophy, and galaxy-spanning adventure, Star Wars is finally stepping fully into horror territory in an official capacity.
Sure, longtime fans know the franchise has flirted with creepy ideas before, but this is the first time Lucasfilm is planting its flag and saying, “Yeah, this one’s meant to scare you.”
According to new details revealed through publishing updates and found by Redditor White_Doggo, the upcoming novel Hiding from the Dark: A Star Wars Horror Novel will deliver a chilling story set in that familiar galaxy far, far away.
Written by Kiersten White, the book marks a big swing for the franchise as it explores something more unsettling than your typical Sith vs. Jedi conflict.
The story centers on a young girl haunted by a terrifying presence as she tries to unravel a mystery that feels straight out of a nightmare. And the big hook here is the question at the center of it all: Is what she’s facing connected to the Sith… or something even worse?
Here’s the official logline: “Venture beyond the dark side in this chilling horror-themed middle grade novel based on the Star Wars galaxy.
Haunted by an evil presence, a young girl tries to solve a nightmarish mystery. Is her bogeyman a Sith…or something darker? Horror readers and Star Wars fans of all ages will thrill to this fright-filled middle grade novel.
Series Overview: Created by visionary writer/director George Lucas, Star Wars is an epic “space opera” and an ever-deepening, timeless, mythological tale of good versus evil, set in a galaxy far, far away.
“Filled with noble Jedi Knights, fearsome creatures, and cruel villains, Star Wars introduced ‘the Force’ into the global vocabulary, along with characters such as evil Darth Vader, wise old Yoda, idealistic Luke Skywalker, and lovable Chewbacca.
“The saga continues to grow and expand, delighting new generations with its exotic worlds, iconic themes, and unforgettable stories.
Our Fall 2026 Star Wars list features a middle grade novel as well as a picture book and a novelization based on new Mandalorian and Grogu movie.”
While Star Wars has dipped into horror elements before, especially in the old Legends continuity like Joe Schreiber’s Death Troopers with its zombie stormtroopers, it’s never quite committed to the genre like this.
Canon has had flashes of eerie storytelling through comics and short fiction from writers like Cavan Scott and George Mann, but nothing branded outright as horror until now.
What makes this even more interesting is that this book is part of a new genre-focused initiative within Star Wars storytelling. The first entry, Eyes Like Stars by Ashley Poston, leans into romance. Now, Hiding from the Dark pushes things in the opposite direction with something far more sinister.
It’s about time! The Star Wars universe is packed with creepy corners just waiting to be explored. Ancient Sith lore, haunted planets, strange Force entities… there’s a ton of material that naturally lends itself to horror.
White’s already proven she can handle both character-driven storytelling and darker themes with books like Paranormalcy, And I Darken, and The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein. Her novel Hide even drew comparisons to Squid Game thanks to its tense and sinister setup, showing she knows how to build dread in a way that sticks.
She’s also no stranger to Star Wars. Fans may remember her novel Padawan, which explored Obi-Wan Kenobi’s early years and his dynamic with Qui-Gon Jinn. That book showed she understands the tone and heart of the franchise, which makes this new horror angle even more exciting.
Lucasfilm Publishing has a long history of pushing Star Wars into new territory. From Shadows of the Empire back in the ‘90s to The High Republic initiative, many of the franchise’s most creative risks have started on the page. This feels like another one of those moments.
If Hiding from the Dark lands the way fans are hoping, it could open the door to even more horror stories in the galaxy. And the idea of a full-on Star Wars horror movie or series doesn’t sound too far-fetched. A lot of fans would love to see that,
For now, though, this novel looks like it’s going to give fans something fresh, eerie, and just a little bit twisted.
