STAR WARS Kabuki Adaptation in the Works in Celebration of THE RISE OF SKYWALKER

The art of Kabuki is a classical Japanese dance-drama known for its elaborate make-up and costumes and stylized performances. The tradition is now reaching across the aisle to a new fanbase in the form of a Star Wars Kabuki to celebrate this December’s The Rise of Skywalker. Nerdist reports that according to SoraNews24:

Star Wars Kabuki will star Ichikawa Ebizo, one of the most famous and popular kabuki performers in all of Japan, and an “A-list Japanese entertainment industry icon.” The performer is apparently a huge fan of Star Wars, and is serving as a supervisor on the project.

The report says this will be a major production that will include important scenes from the latest trilogy. They also provided the following description and quote from the star:

Star Wars Kabuki will depict the love and loss felt by the Skywalker family over the past 40-plus years. Whether you ’re a Star Wars lover or a kabuki lover, it ’s a great piece to enjoy.” Ichikawa will portray the complicated, villainous Kylo Ren—the grandson of Darth Vader and nephew of famed Jedi Luke Skywalker—in the generational portrayal.

This sounds like it would be incredible to watch, and a fascinating mash up of an iconic tale from the point of view of this classic cultural tradition.

Star Wars Kabuki-Rennosuke Hikarigatana Sanbon will run for one night only on November 28th in Tokyo. The location is not yet known.
