STAR WARS: MAUL – SHADOW LORD Teaser Released Ahead of Tomorrow’s Official Trailer Debut
Lucasfilm has officially confirmed that the first full trailer for Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord will drop tomorrow, but today we have a short and unsettling teaser to share with you for the upcoming Disney+ animated series. It offers a dark taste of what’s coming next for one of Star Wars’ most dangerous villains.
Darth Maul’s story has always been one of survival and obsession. After Obi-Wan Kenobi seemingly ended him in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, the character was later revealed to have endured the impossible during Star Wars: The Clone Wars, returning with cybernetic legs and a renewed thirst for power.
His arc eventually carried over into Star Wars Rebels, where Maul’s long rivalry with Obi-Wan finally reached its conclusion on Tatooine.
Before that ending, George Lucas once envisioned Maul as “the godfather of crime in the universe,” with plans to make him a major underworld figure and the Sith master of Darth Talon in his original sequel trilogy concepts.
Those ideas were ultimately set aside, but the criminal empire angle lived on. Solo: A Star Wars Story brought Maul into live action again, revealing him as the secret leader of Crimson Dawn. When that film failed to launch a sequel, fans were left wondering what happened during the missing years of his rise.
That gap is exactly where Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord steps in. The teaser is short but effective. It flashes eerie imagery, a brief lightsaber clash, and a striking new look at Maul before ending on his unmistakable, chilling laugh.
An official synopsis for the series reads: “After the Clone Wars, Maul plots to rebuild his criminal syndicate on a planet untouched by the Empire. In a new series set after the events of the final season of The Clone Wars, Maul rises again to lead the underworld factions.”
During a panel at Star Wars Celebration Japan last year, Lucasfilm also revealed that the show will dive into Maul’s childhood and explore the origin of Darth Talon, adding even more depth to his already complex mythology.
While some fans might wish this story were told in live action, there’s a major win on the casting front. Sam Witwer returns to voice Maul, continuing a role he’s defined across The Clone Wars and Rebels.
Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord is set to debut on Disney+ later this year.
