STAR WARS Novel REIGN OF THE EMPIRE: EDGE OF THE ABYSS Sets the Stage for ANDOR’s Darkest Chapter
Star Wars has never followed a straight timeline. George Lucas kicked that tradition off in 1977 when the very first film hit theaters labeled Episode IV. Since then the franchise has jumped backward and forward across decades of galactic history.
Now Lucasfilm Publishing is digging into one of the most fascinating eras of all with a new novel that connects directly to Andor.
The next chapter in the Reign of the Empire trilogy has been revealed, and it’s bringing readers right into the dangerous years when the Empire’s grip on the galaxy tightened and the seeds of rebellion started growing in secret.
Lucasfilm has unveiled the cover for Star Wars: Reign of the Empire – Edge of the Abyss, the second book in the trilogy written by Rebecca Roanhorse. The story takes place during the Dark Times, roughly a year before the events of Andor, and it’s packed with characters that you’ll recognize.
Among the returning players are Anto Kreegyr, Luthen Rael, Kleya Marki, Nisus Osar, Perrin Fertha, Leida Mothma, Mon Mothma, Bail Organa, and Saw Gerrera.
For fans who have been invested in the political maneuvering and underground rebellion building in Andor, that lineup alone makes this novel feel essential.
Nisus Osar is particularly interesting because viewers briefly saw the character working within the Ministry of Enlightenment during Andor Season 2 while planning anti-Ghorman propaganda.
The novel will apparently explore that storyline further, even taking readers directly to Ghorman itself. That’s a huge detail because the Ghorman Massacre is one of the most significant events in the early Rebellion, and it’s expected to play a major role in the upcoming season of the show.
Roanhorse already proved she knows her way around this galaxy. She previously wrote Resistance Reborn, the tie-in novel leading into Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Her return to the franchise is exciting, especially with characters like Luthen Rael and Kleya Marki involved.
Their secretive rebel network has always felt mysterious, and this story might finally reveal how the Axis network came together.
One tease connected to the book has already sparked a lot of fan excitement. On social media, an editor working on the project dropped three simple words: “Leia, meet Leida.”
That opens up a fascinating dynamic. Leida Mothma has been a complicated character in Andor, especially with her strained relationship with Mon. Seeing her cross paths with Princess Leia adds an emotional layer that longtime fans will immediately appreciate.
Leia’s presence also connects the story to familiar territory. Fans already saw a younger version of the character in Obi-Wan Kenobi, played by Vivien Lyra Blair, and the new novel could explore more of her early life on Alderaan under the watchful eye of Bail Organa.
Bail always tried to keep his adopted daughter out of the political spotlight as long as possible, which makes her eventual role as a rebel leader all the more powerful.
There’s also a bittersweet angle tied to Leia meeting Leida. Years later, after the destruction of Alderaan, Leia would develop a bond with Mon Mothma that felt more like family than politics. In many ways she became the daughter figure Mon never truly had with Leida.
Lucasfilm’s publishing arm has always been a great place to explore the inner lives of these characters, and the Reign of the Empire trilogy seems built for exactly that. The first novel, Star Wars: Reign of the Empire – The Mask of Fear by Alexander Freed, was widely praised by fans and readers.
If Roanhorse delivers the same kind of character-driven storytelling that made Andor so great, this book could become a must-read for anyone invested in the early days of the Rebellion.
Star Wars: Reign of the Empire – Edge of the Abyss arrives on September 15, 2026.
