STAR WARS Production Designer Confirms a Spin-Off Film Set on Tatooine Was in Development

There's no doubt that Lucasfilm is developing several Star Wars film projects at the moment that have yet to be officially announced. A couple of months ago it was reported that they were developing at least nine Star Wars movies.

Those movies definitely include Rian Johnson's trilogy, as well at the film being developed by Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. Then there's obviously Episode IX, but anything beyond those, including the Boba Fett and the Obi-Wan Kenobi films, has yet to be seen.

There were also reports of a spin-off film set on the planet Tatooine that revolved around Mos Eisley, the spaceport Luke Skywalker goes into in the original film. It turns out that film was actually in development and it was confirmed by production designer Neil Lamont, who told CinemaBlend:

"We were just starting our work on another Star Wars spin-off and yeah. We were actually just making our mark on Tatooine — which would have been interesting and some other new galaxies. So hopefully, if that comes back, we’ll get the chance to be able to do that further."

That production was obviously put on hold for the time being and there's no guarantee that Lucasfilm will move forward with it in the future. I also just want to clarify that this would have been a completely different project than the Obi-Wan film.

One day Lucasfilm will have a solid plan in place for the Star Wars franchise, and when they do, I'm sure they'll announce the films that they have coming. I'm excited to see what the future of Star Wars will be and as fun as it is to talk about rumors and discuss the things we'd like to see, hopefully we get some concrete news soon from Lucasfilm.
