STAR WARS: ROGUE ONE - JYN ERSO #1 Reveals a High-Stakes Prison Escape Before the Rebellion

It’s been ten years since Rogue One hit theaters and left a lasting mark on the Star Wars franchise. To celebrate the anniversary, Marvel Comics is rolling out a series of one-shot stories spotlighting key characters from the film.

While the first issue focuses on Cassian Andor, it’s the second release that’s grabbing a lot of attention. Star Wars: Rogue One - Jyn Erso #1 is shaping up to deliver a tense and personal story centered on one of the franchise’s most compelling heroes.

Written by Ethan Sacks with art by Ramon Rosanas, the issue drops readers into Jyn’s time on Wobani, a harsh Imperial labor camp where she’s operating under the alias Liana Hallik.

The story follows her attempt to pull off a desperate escape while navigating deadly odds, including security droids and brutal environmental hazards. It’s a tight, self-contained narrative that digs into who Jyn is when everything is on the line.

Sacks, who’s no stranger to the Star Wars universe, talked to ComicBook and shared how much this project meant to him:

“I have been looking forward to doing a Jyn Erso story for the last few years, and the stars (so to speak) have aligned for the chance to tell it within the tenth anniversary of Rogue One. A decade ago, I got to attend the world premiere of the film in Los Angeles and it has not left my mind ever since.

“Rogue One is my favorite Star Wars film since The Empire Strikes Back, which means it’s on the highest of pedestals in my pop culture pantheon. I have always been more drawn to the street-level scoundrels in the Star Wars universe over the Jedi and Sith; the grey over the black and white.

“So, that morally murky soup of spies and assassins who do what they have to without having Force powers to get them out of jams continues to be what excites me the most. And who better exemplifies that than Jyn Erso?”

That perspective really comes through in this story. Jyn has always stood apart from the typical Star Wars hero. She’s not guided by the Force or destiny. She survives through instinct, resilience, and grit. This issue leans into that, showing her at a breaking point while still fighting forward.

To better understand Jyn’s mindset, Sacks revisited her expanded backstory, including the novel by Beth Revis:

“Besides watching Rogue One for the gazillionth time, researching this issue gave me the chance to revisit the excellent novel, Rebel Rising, by Beth Revis, which does an excellent job of chronicling Jyn Erso’s life as a revolutionary turned slicer.

“That gave me a view inside her head. We’re all the product of past experiences and traumas, and it amazed me to be reminded of just how much of that trauma she went through and how impressive it is that she emerged to be the person she is when we meet her on screen. She’s inspirational to me.”

That emotional weight seems to be a key part of the story. This isn’t just an action-heavy escape attempt. It’s about what drives Jyn to keep going, even when everything around her is falling apart.

Sacks also talked about how the one-shot format shaped the storytelling:

“Having a fixed runway to land the plane focuses you on distilling a story to the core character and their arc. Some stories work best as 10-pagers, some work best as single issues, some work best over a mini-series, and ongoing series like Bounty Hunters can give you the opportunity to develop a character’s journey over many trials and tribulations.

“This particular Jyn Erso story shows you who she is during a particularly dangerous and tragic escape attempt at the Imperial work camp on Wobani. It works precisely because it’s self-contained. Of course, it helps to have an artist like Ramon Rosanas making it look so damn great.”

On Wobani’s toxic fields, Jyn’s routine is shattered when a group of desperate prisoners turns to her for help. They believe “Liana Hallik” can get them out. The question is whether she can outmaneuver the Empire long enough to survive, and whether helping others might reopen old wounds tied to her past with Galen, Lyra, and Saw Gerrera.

Star Wars: Rogue One — Jyn Erso #1 hits shelves on June 3rd, and it’s looking like a must-read for fans who’ve always connected with Jyn’s story. It digs into her toughest moments and reminds us why she became such a standout character in Rogue One.
