STAR WARS: STARFIGHTER Rumored to Feature a "Big Cameo" That Could Launch a New Trilogy
A new rumor is making the rounds that Shawn Levy’s upcoming Star Wars: Starfighter may not be a one-off after all. Instead, Lucasfilm is reportedly planning to use it as the launchpad for an entirely new trilogy, and a major cameo could be the key to setting it all in motion.
While The Mandalorian and Grogu is set to make the jump from Disney+ to the big screen next May, Lucasfilm is already looking toward Star Wars: Starfighter in 2027 as the first of a new wave of theatrical stories. The studio’s goal is to bring the franchise back to box office dominance.
According to scooper @MyTimeToShineH, Lucasfilm intends for Starfighter to serve as the opening chapter of a trilogy. The film is said to feature a "big cameo" that sets up a sequel, and the most likely candidate is Daisy Ridley’s Rey Skywalker.
With Ridley already set to reprise her role in Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s long-delayed The Rise of Skywalker follow-up, it’s hard not to connect the dots and wonder if that movie will end up being the second chapter in this trilogy.
We also know a bit about the story. A recent report revealed, "The main kid [in Starfighter] is Force-sensitive. His mom is being played, as we said, by Amy Adams. She seems to be a Jedi. Gosling is not a Jedi, but he's helping his nephew escape two evil bad guys who are chasing him across the stars. He has a mission he's on, given to him by Adams."
That naturally raises the question that asks if this mission could be about taking the boy to Rey and her new Jedi Academy? It feels like a real possibility, but given Lucasfilm’s history of shifting plans, it’s probably best to wait and see how it all unfolds.
For now, Lucasfilm is keeping official details locked away. The project has only been described as “an all-new standalone adventure” and “an entirely original story set in a period of time never before explored in Star Wars.” Still, between the rumored trilogy setup and this mysterious cameo, it’s clear there’s more going on than meets the eye.
The cast of Star Wars: Starfighter includes Ryan Gosling, joined by Flynn Gray (Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2), Matt Smith (House of the Dragon), Mia Goth (Infinity Pool), Aaron Pierre (Lanterns), Simon Bird (The Inbetweeners), Jamael Westman (Hedda), Daniel Ings (Lovesick), and Amy Adams (Man of Steel).
Levy, who previously directed Free Guy and Deadpool & Wolverine, is both directing and producing alongside Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy.
When production kicked off earlier this year, Levy shared his excitement, saying, "I feel a profound sense of excitement and honor as we begin production on Star Wars: Starfighter.
“From the day Kathy Kennedy called me up, inviting me to develop an original adventure in this incredible Star Wars galaxy, this experience has been a dream come true, creatively and personally."
He went on to add, "Star Wars shaped my sense of what story can do, how characters and cinematic moments can live with us forever. To join this storytelling galaxy with such brilliant collaborators onscreen and off, is the thrill of a lifetime."
Star Wars: Starfighter hits theaters on May 28, 2027.
